Plaid Reveals Where Street Lights Have Been Turned Off

For the first time, Plaid Cymru can reveal how many street lights in every area of Caerphilly county have been switched off in the early hours.

A Freedom of Information request by the party showed that in seven areas– Crumlin, Risca East, Caerphilly Central, Pontlllanfraith, Penmaen (Argoed), Blackwood and Ystrad Mynach – more than 1,000 street lights had been turned off between midnight and 5.30am.

Earlier this month Labour rulers in Caerphilly county voted down a notice of motion supported by Plaid and Independent councillors to review the decision to turn off lights in the early hours.

Councillor Colin Mann, leader of the Plaid Cymru group, said: “Every resident in every ward can now see for themselves the impact of Labour’s great switch-off decision.

“This action has an impact on everyone, particularly the vulnerable, the elderly and shift workers. Because of Labour’s action, people will be confined to the dark this autumn and winter and it is wrong.

“Even at this stage, I urge the Labour leadership to take another look at their flawed policy and switch the lights back on as soon as possible.”

The number of lights switched off in each area is Risca East 1,063, Risca West 473, Abercarn 769, Bedwas, Trethomas & Machen 833, Newbridge 876, Mornington Meadows (St James) 513, Crumlin 1,128, Caerphilly Central 1,063, Mynyddislwyn 850, Caerphilly (St James) 726, Pontllanfraith 1,095, St Martins, Caerphilly 653, Penmaen (Argoed) 1,056, Penyrheol 638, Blackwood 1,027, Aber Valley 540, Llanbradach 451, Ystrad Mynach 1,001, Maesycwmmer 381, Nelson 646, St Cattwg 814, Cefn Forest 947, Bargoed 838.

Where lights have still to be switched off the following numbers will be turned off: Aberbargoed 403, Fochriw (Darren Valley) 381, New Tredegar 756, Abertysswg (Moriah) 604 and Rhymney (Twyncarno & Pontlottyn) 814.
